-
Taylor School District is asking voters to consider a replacement and restoration of its existing non-homestead operating millage authority.
The district’s current authorization expires with the 2027 tax levy. The proposal would authorize the millage for 10 years, from 2026 through 2035.
-
For purposes of this proposal, the millage applies to eligible non-homestead property.
Principal residences and other property exempted by law are not subject to this millage.
-
No. Principal residences and other property exempted by law are not subject to this millage.
-
The proposal includes two components:
- 17.5603 mills to replace authorized millage that would otherwise expire.
- 0.4397 mills to restore millage previously lost through Headlee rollbacks.
The replacement and restoration would allow the district to maintain the ability to levy up to the statutory maximum of 18 mills
-
The proposal asks voters to authorize 20 mills, but the district’s actual levy is limited to the statutory maximum of 18 mills.
The district would not levy 20 mills.
The additional authorization provides a buffer for future Headlee rollbacks, allowing the district to maintain the ability to levy up to the full 18 mills.
-
Over time, Headlee rollbacks have reduced the amount of non-homestead millage Taylor School District can actually levy below the statutory 18-mill limit.
The proposal would restore millage that has already been lost and provide additional authorization to protect against future rollbacks.
-
The additional authorization creates a buffer against future Headlee rollbacks.
The goal is to provide the district with enough authorization to maintain the full 18-mill levy despite future Headlee rollbacks, rather than having to repeatedly return to voters every time the authorized rate is reduced
-
The proposed authorization would run for 10 years, from 2026 through 2035, inclusive.
It is designed to reduce the need for another replacement/restoration request through 2035, subject to applicable law and future circumstances.
-
The district may levy up to the statutory maximum of 18 mills on eligible non-homestead property.
An 18-mill levy equals $18 per $1,000 of taxable value.
-
The ballot proposal estimates $420,661 in revenue during the 2026 calendar year.
-
The revenue would be used for general operating purposes.
- Teacher and staff salaries and benefits
- Textbooks, curriculum, and classroom supplies
- Classroom technology and devices
- Student support services such as counseling, reading intervention, and special education
- Athletics, arts, music, and extracurricular programming
- Student transportation
- Utilities, custodial services, and routine building maintenance
-
The ballot language states that maintaining the full allowable levy would allow Taylor School District to continue receiving revenues at the full per-pupil foundation allowance permitted by the State.
-
-
Taylor School District is asking voters to replace and restore its existing non-homestead operating millage authority. The millage does not apply to principal residences.
While the proposal asks voters to authorize 20 mills, the district can levy no more than 18 mills. The additional 2 mills are not extra taxes — they act as a buffer. If future Headlee rollbacks reduce the millage rate, that headroom allows the district to continue levying the full 18 mills through 2035, subject to applicable law and future circumstances.
